What an alert means (and doesn't)

How to read an alert before you react to it.

Reading it

Step 1 of 4

What's in an alert

The app or site, and the text that matched a rule: a word from their keyword list, or from our built-in adult or gambling lists. Sometimes extra text from the same screen comes along with it, like a username or a caption fragment.

What it means

Step 2 of 4

Detected is not the same as typed

LeadMeNot reads what's on the screen. A matched word may have been typed or searched, or it may have been in a caption, a suggested post, a Reel, an ad or a page they scrolled past. The alert can't tell you which. That's a question for them, asked gently.

Watch out

Several alerts in a row from the same app usually mean they were scrolling a feed, not searching.

False alarms

Step 3 of 4

Alerts that aren't about them

Some words on our lists match innocent things: a contact's name, a product, a word inside a longer word. If an alert looks wrong, it probably is. They can email jason@leadmenot.org to get the word removed for everyone.

Step 4 of 4

What you won't see

No link to the page, no screenshot, no history. LeadMeNot is text-based today. If you need more context, the honest route is to ask them.
