Best accountability app for teens

For a young child you want a parental control app, and we'll tell you which. For an older teen who's on board, accountability works better than surveillance. Here's the honest split.

The short version

  • LeadMeNot: For an older teen who's on board.
  • Bark: pick it for message and social monitoring.
  • Qustodio: pick it for a younger child.
  • Canopy: pick it for image filtering and sexting prevention.

A plain truth first: LeadMeNot is built for adults choosing their own boundaries. Parents use it for teens by setting it up with them, as their partner.1 It has no location tracking, no message scanning and no parent dashboard, and it isn't trying to.

So this page splits by age and by buy-in.

A young child, or a teen who isn't on board: you want a parental control app. Bark, Qustodio and Canopy are built for exactly that, and they're good at it.

An older teen who wants help: accountability beats surveillance. A teenager who knows exactly what their parent will be told, and that it's the line they agreed to rather than everything they do, tends to keep the app. That's where LeadMeNot fits, with the parent as partner.

The picks, one by one

For an older teen who's on board

LeadMeNot

Set it up together: switch on the Adult Websites & Apps list, block the apps you agree on, set a bedtime schedule, and the parent is emailed when a rule is broken and gets an evening reflection. Safe Wall means the teen can't loosen it without the parent's OK. Works on their phone, laptop and Chromebook on one account.

Where it falls short: No location, no message scanning, no dashboard, and it reads text only. If you need any of those, pick a parental control app below.

Pick this for message and social monitoring

Bark

Scans texts, email, photos, videos and 30+ apps for warning signs across 19 categories, alerts parents, filters sites and categories including adult content, blocks specific sites and apps, and sets rules for school time, bedtime and free time.2,4

Pick something else if: Built for parents of kids and teens; it's monitoring the child's world rather than a boundary the teen chose. Devices: Android, iPhone, Chromebook and game consoles, plus Bark Home for the home Wi-Fi.

Pick this for a younger child

Qustodio

Blocks adult or sensitive websites by default, filters by category, blocks games and apps with time limits, daily allowances, routines and a pause button, AI alerts about concerning messages or searches, and location. Runs on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Chromebook and Kindle.3,5

Pick something else if: Built for parents managing a child's device; an older teen may experience it as surveillance.

Pick this for image filtering and sexting prevention

Canopy

Real-time AI replaces explicit images and video with white boxes in browsers and many apps, can hold a child's flagged photos for a parent to review, and blocks apps on phones and tablets.6

Pick something else if: Best known as a parental control; app blocking is on phones and tablets rather than computers.

How we chose

LeadMeNot wrote this guide, so our own app is in it. To keep it fair: every fact about another app links to its source (the app's own site where possible), each one gets a plain line on who should pick it instead, and the table only shows what we could verify. A dash means we couldn't confirm it, not that the app lacks it.

We looked at the three things that decide whether a blocker still works a month later: what you can block (not just a list of adult sites, but the apps, places and words that are the problem for you), whether anyone is told when a line is crossed, and whether a weak moment can undo it. Free built-in tools are listed first wherever they exist, because a lot of people need nothing more.

LeadMeNot blocks what you choose, tells someone you trust when a rule is broken, and makes a weak moment wait. Free to try on every device you own.

Questions

Is LeadMeNot a parental control app?

No. It's built for adults choosing their own boundaries. Parents use it for older teens who are on board, by setting it up together with the parent as the accountability partner. It has no location tracking, message scanning or parent dashboard.

What's the best app to block porn on my teenager's phone?

For a young child or a teen who isn't on board: a parental control app such as Qustodio, Bark or Canopy. For an older teen who wants help, LeadMeNot with the parent as partner: the teen knows exactly what the parent is told, and can't loosen it without the parent's OK.

Can a teen remove LeadMeNot?

With Safe Wall set to Approval from partner, loosening a rule or switching protection off needs the parent's OK, and with Monitor on the parent is told if it's logged out, uninstalled or switched off.
