The short version
- Apple's Limit Adult Websites filter is free and built in. Turn it on under Screen Time, then set a Screen Time passcode you don't know.
- It filters Safari and web content, not what happens inside apps, and anyone with the passcode can switch it off in seconds.
- If you want someone told when a line is crossed, and a change to wait for their OK, that's what an accountability app adds.
Start with the free filter
Every iPhone and iPad has a web filter built in. It won't cost you anything and it takes two minutes.
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and switch it on.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games, then Web Content.1
- Choose Limit Adult Websites. Under Never Allow, add any site the filter misses.2
- Go back to the Screen Time screen and set a Screen Time passcode.
The passcode is the whole game. If you know it, the filter is a speed bump, not a wall. Have someone you trust set it and keep it, or write it down, seal it, and give it to them.
What it does well
Apple's filter blocks a large list of known adult sites in Safari and in most apps that open web pages, and you can add your own sites to the Never Allow list. For a lot of people that's enough to stop the casual, bored tap.
Where it stops
- It's a web filter. It doesn't see what happens inside apps like X, Reddit, Telegram or Snapchat, and it can't filter images in a feed.
- It's silent. Nobody is told when something is blocked, or when the filter is switched off.
- The passcode is the lock. Whoever knows it can change anything. Apple's own recovery options mean a determined person can usually get back in.
- It's whole sites or nothing. You can't take out just the part of a site that's the problem.
None of this is a criticism of Apple. Screen Time was built for parents managing a child's phone, and for that it's very good.
If you need more than a filter
Ask yourself two questions. Do I want someone to know? And do I want a change to have to wait? If either answer is yes, you want an accountability app, not a stronger filter.
Here's what LeadMeNot adds on iPhone, honestly:
- a built-in Adult Websites & Apps list you switch on once, which you can't quietly switch off.
- block the apps you choose on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, using Apple's own Screen Time permission, so you keep your Screen Time settings.
- block just part of a site, like youtube.com/shorts or instagram.com/reels, and keep the rest, in Safari through the Safari Extension.3
- a partner who is alerted when a rule is broken, and who gets your short evening reflection. The partner doesn't install anything; alerts come by email.
- Safe Wall: loosening a rule takes your partner's OK or a waiting period.
- with Monitor on, your partner is told if LeadMeNot is logged out, uninstalled or switched off.
On iPhone, every app works inside Apple's limits. LeadMeNot filters Safari through its Safari Extension or, if you prefer, through VPN protection; inside other apps it can block or time-limit the whole app, but can't filter one part of it. LeadMeNot reads text on screen (addresses, searches, keywords, app names), not images; image detection is in development.
Set it up in an evening
- Turn on Apple's filter above, and give the passcode to someone else.
- Install LeadMeNot from leadmenot.org/download and follow the first-day walkthrough: switch on the Adult Websites & Apps rule, block any app that's a problem for you, and add a website rule for anything specific.
- Add a partner and set up Safe Wall with Approval from partner.
- Test it: type the word leadmenottest (no .com) into Safari. If it's blocked, you're protected.
If you only do step 1, you've still done something real. The other steps are for the day the filter alone isn't enough.

Questions
Is Apple's Limit Adult Websites filter good enough?
For stopping the casual tap in Safari, yes, and it's free. It doesn't see inside apps, it doesn't tell anyone when it's switched off, and anyone with the Screen Time passcode can turn it off. If those gaps matter to you, add an accountability app.
Can I block porn inside apps on iPhone?
Not with Apple's filter. LeadMeNot can block or time-limit whole apps on iPhone, and filters Safari with its Adult Websites & Apps list and your own rules. Filtering one part of another app isn't something any app can do on iPhone.
Does LeadMeNot replace Screen Time?
No, it works alongside it. LeadMeNot uses Apple's Screen Time permission to block apps, so you can keep your Screen Time settings.
