How to block porn on Android

Android has no adult filter for your own account. Here are the free workarounds, what each one really covers, and how to get a block that someone else would notice you removing.

The short version

  • Android has no built-in adult filter for an adult's own account. Family Link is for a child's account.
  • Free options: Google SafeSearch (Google results only) and Private DNS set to Cloudflare for Families, which filters at the network level.
  • Both can be switched off in seconds and nobody is told. An accountability app adds a partner, app blocking and a lock.

The honest starting point

Unlike iPhone, Android doesn't ship with an adult-content filter you can switch on for yourself. Google's Family Link can filter a child's account, but it's a parent-managed tool, not a self-control one. So the free options are workarounds. Two are worth doing.

Free option 1: Google SafeSearch

SafeSearch hides explicit results from Google Search.1

  1. Open the Google app and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings, then SafeSearch.
  3. Choose Filter.

It only affects Google results. It does nothing for a site you type in directly, for other search engines, or for apps.

Free option 2: Private DNS with a family filter

This one is better than most people realise. Android lets you set a Private DNS provider for the whole phone, and Cloudflare runs a free one that blocks malware and adult content: the hostname is family.cloudflare-dns.com.2

  1. Open Settings and search for Private DNS (on Samsung it's under Connections › More connection settings).
  2. Choose Private DNS provider hostname.
  3. Type family.cloudflare-dns.com and tap Save.

Now every app and browser on the phone resolves addresses through a filtered server, on Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Important

Two catches. It's a known list of sites, so it misses things, and it filters whole domains, so it can't block adult content inside a site that's mostly fine. And it's three taps to switch off, with nobody told.

Where the free options stop

  • Nothing is reported. Switch either one off and the only person who knows is you.
  • Apps are untouched. A feed in X, Reddit, Telegram or a browser you sideload isn't filtered by SafeSearch at all, and Private DNS only blocks whole sites.
  • Keywords don't exist. You can't block a search term or a word inside an app.
  • No limits or schedules. Android's Digital Wellbeing can set app timers, but it's a separate tool with its own one-tap override.

Where LeadMeNot goes further on Android

Android is where LeadMeNot has the most room to work, because Android lets an accessibility app read the text on screen.

  • a built-in Adult Websites & Apps list you switch on once, and a built-in Gambling list, plus any betting app you choose to block.
  • block the apps you choose on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, properly blocked, not locked behind a PIN you know.
  • block just part of a site, like youtube.com/shorts or instagram.com/reels, and keep the rest, in browsers and inside the apps themselves on Android.3
  • keyword and phrase rules, inside apps on Android, Windows and Mac, in Safari on iPhone and in Chrome on Chromebook: a word on your list is blocked wherever it appears on screen, including inside apps.
  • a partner who is alerted when a rule is broken, and who gets your short evening reflection, and Safe Wall: loosening a rule takes your partner's OK or a waiting period.
  • with Monitor on, your partner is told if LeadMeNot is logged out, uninstalled or switched off.
Honest note

LeadMeNot reads text on screen (addresses, searches, keywords, app names), not images; image detection is in development. If images in a feed are your main worry, say so when you choose an app; it matters more than any other feature.

Set it up in an evening

  1. Set Private DNS to Cloudflare for Families (above). It's free and it catches a lot.
  2. Install LeadMeNot from leadmenot.org/download and follow the Android first-day walkthrough: switch on the Adult Websites & Apps rule, add the apps and words that are a problem for you.
  3. Add a partner, turn on uninstall protection and set Safe Wall to Approval from partner.
  4. Test it: type leadmenottest into your browser. Blocked means protected.

Questions

Does Android have a built-in porn blocker?

Not for an adult's own account. Family Link filters a child's account. For yourself, the free options are Google SafeSearch and Private DNS set to a family-filter provider such as Cloudflare's family.cloudflare-dns.com.

Is Private DNS enough to block porn on Android?

It blocks a long list of known adult sites in every app and browser, which is a good start. It misses sites that aren't on the list, can't filter inside apps, and takes three taps to turn off with nobody told.

Can LeadMeNot block keywords inside apps on Android?

Yes. On Android, LeadMeNot reads the text on screen, so a word on your list is blocked wherever it appears, including inside apps. It reads text, not images.
