How to find an accountability partner

The best partner isn't the most spiritual person you know or the strictest. It's the one who'll answer a text at midnight without making it worse.

The short version

  • Pick someone safe, available and steady. Not someone you're trying to impress, and not someone who'll panic.
  • Tell them exactly what they'll get and what they won't. In LeadMeNot: an alert when a rule is broken and a short evening note. No history, no screenshots.
  • Ask for one thing: that they reply. A request left hanging is worse than a no.

Who to ask

Three qualities matter more than anything else.

Safe. You'll be telling this person the worst of it. If the thought of them knowing makes you want to hide the truth, they're the wrong person, even if they're a wonderful person.

Available. Alerts don't arrive at convenient times. Someone who checks email once a week can't do this. Someone in a very different time zone struggles too.

Steady. You want someone who'll say "OK, tell me about it" rather than "I can't believe you". The job isn't to be shocked. It's to be there.

Spouses can be good partners, and they can be the wrong partner. If your partner is your spouse and the thing you're fighting hurts them directly, consider a second partner too, so the whole weight doesn't land on the marriage. LeadMeNot allows up to three.

Who not to ask

  • Someone who'll use it against you later.
  • Someone who struggles with the same thing and hasn't got a handle on it. Two people drowning don't make a lifeguard.
  • Your teenager, for anything adult.
  • Anyone you'd lie to.

What to tell them they'll get

Be concrete. Most people say no to accountability because they imagine reading your browsing history every night. That's not what they'd get.

With LeadMeNot, your partner receives:1

  • an email alert when a rule you've chosen to monitor is broken, with the app or site and the words that matched;
  • a request to approve, if you try to loosen your protection and you've set Safe Wall to need their OK;
  • your short evening reflection, if you choose to send one.

They do not receive your history, your messages or screenshots. They don't install anything; the free LMN Partner app is optional. The whole job takes a few minutes a week.

The conversation

You don't need a speech. Something like:

"I'm trying to deal with something, and I've realised I can't do it alone. I've set up an app that blocks the stuff I don't want and I need one person it can tell when I cross a line. You'd get an email now and then, and a short note from me most evenings. You don't have to fix anything. I just need you to reply when something comes through, even if it's one word. Would you do that?"

Then send them What being an accountability partner means. It's two minutes and it answers the questions they're too polite to ask.

What to ask them for

One thing: reply. Approve or decline a request, even if the answer is no. Acknowledge an alert, even with "saw this, talk later". Silence is the one response that makes accountability pointless.

Set them up

In LeadMeNot: Add a partner, make sure Monitor is on for the rules you want them to hear about, and set Safe Wall to Approval from partner.

Questions

Should my spouse be my accountability partner?

Often yes, and sometimes the whole weight shouldn't land on the marriage. If the thing you're fighting hurts your spouse directly, consider a second partner too. LeadMeNot allows up to three.

What does an accountability partner actually receive?

In LeadMeNot: an email when a monitored rule is broken (the app or site and the matched words), a request to approve if you try to loosen protection with Safe Wall set to need their OK, and your evening reflection. No browsing history, messages or screenshots.

Does my partner need to install anything?

No. Everything arrives by email. The free LMN Partner app is optional and makes approving requests quicker.
