The short version
- Willpower in the moment is the weakest tool you have. Decide everything before the moment.
- Four parts: decide what's off-limits, make it hard to reach, bring one person in, and make any change wait.
- Software is one layer. If it's been years, or it's costing you a relationship or a job, add a counselor or a group. That's not failure; it's the plan.
First, a true thing
Almost everyone who struggles with porn has quit before. Dozens of times. Usually in the morning, usually with real conviction, and usually with no plan for 11:40pm on a Thursday when nothing in particular is wrong and the phone is right there.
So this plan doesn't ask you to want it more. It assumes you'll want it less later, and builds for that.
Part 1: decide, in a calm moment
Write down, now, exactly what's off-limits. Not "porn" in the abstract. The sites. The apps where it finds you. The searches. The subreddits. The times of day. The "just checking" paths that end in the same place.
Then decide what the rules are. All day? After 10pm? Is Instagram a problem, or just Reels? Being specific here is what lets software help you later. Vague rules produce vague protection.
Part 2: make it hard to reach
Every free tool on your devices helps a little, and you should use them: iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. Hand any passcodes to someone else.
Then add a blocker that does what the free tools can't:
- a built-in Adult Websites & Apps list you switch on once.
- block the apps you choose on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, and block just part of a site, like youtube.com/shorts or instagram.com/reels, and keep the rest.
- keyword and phrase rules, inside apps on Android, Windows and Mac, in Safari on iPhone and in Chrome on Chromebook.
- daily limits (iPhone, Windows, Mac) and schedules (every device), so the hard hours are covered.
Friction works. Not because you can't get around it, but because getting around it takes long enough for the moment to pass.
Part 3: bring one person in
This is the part most people skip, and it's the part that works.
You don't need a group, a programme or a confession. You need one person who will be told when a line is crossed, and who will ask how you're doing without making it a trial. A spouse, a close friend, a brother, a pastor, a counselor. Someone whose knowing changes your 11:40pm maths.
In LeadMeNot that person is your partner. They don't install anything. They get an email when a rule you've chosen to monitor is broken, and a short reflection from you each evening. They don't see your history or screenshots; they see the app or site and the words that matched.1 Not sure who to ask? How to find an accountability partner.
Part 4: make a weak moment wait
The last piece. On a bad night, you'll want to turn it off. Make that impossible to do quickly.
Safe Wall means loosening a rule, whitelisting a site or switching protection off needs your partner's approval, or a waiting period you set in advance. with Monitor on, your partner is told if LeadMeNot is logged out, uninstalled or switched off. The urge is real but it's short; this makes sure the protection outlasts it.
When you slip
You probably will, at some point. A slip is information, not a verdict. Tell your partner before they get the alert. Note what the day was like: tired, lonely, bored, angry, celebrating. Patterns show up fast once you're honest about them, and LeadMeNot's evening reflection and Record an incident exist for exactly this.
Then tighten the rule that let it through, and carry on. The people who get free aren't the ones who never slip. They're the ones who stop treating a slip as proof that the whole thing is pointless.
When to get more help
If this has been years, if it's escalating, if it's costing you a marriage or a job, or if what you're drawn to frightens you, software is not the answer on its own, and we'd be lying to say otherwise. Talk to a counselor who works with compulsive sexual behaviour. Groups like Samson Society and Pure Desire exist for this. Faith communities often have men's and women's groups that know this ground well. Blocking buys you quiet. People help you use it.

Questions
Can an app help me quit porn?
It can do one job well: make the thing hard to reach in the moment, and tell someone when a line is crossed. It can't want it for you or do the work a counselor or a group does. The people who do best use all three.
Does my accountability partner see everything I do?
In LeadMeNot, no. They're told when a rule you've chosen to monitor is broken (the app or site and the words that matched) and they get your short evening reflection. No history, no screenshots.
What if I relapse?
Tell your partner first. Write down what the day was like. Tighten the rule that let it through. A slip is information about where the plan is thin, not proof that it's pointless.
